You can apply to the Municipality of your residence to issue a marriage licence in order to perform a civil wedding ceremony.

The following conditions need to be met:

• you need to be a Greek citizen
• you need to legally reside in Greece
• you need to have announced the details of the upcoming marriage in a daily newspaper

You will need to:

• fill in your personal Taxisnet credentials (after first registering in the National Communication Register (EMEP) to confirm your mobile phone number)
• attach the entire page of the newspaper in which the announcement of your marriage was published displaying the full name of the newspaper and the date of publication. If the name and date are not indicated, you will need to attach a file with the entire first page together with the announcement
• attach a proof of your permanent residence

Such a proof of your permanent residence can be either:

• a copy of income tax return (E1 form ) or a copy of the income tax return statement of the last financial year
• a recent mobile phone bill or a bill of a public utility company (e.g. fixed telephony bill, electricity bill, water supply or gas supply bill)

The civil marriage licence is issued after 7 calendar days, so that there is the necessary period of time for filing complaints against the upcoming marriage.
